Camp FAQs

What is Mad Science?
Mad Science is the world’s leading provider of educational and entertaining science programs for children aged 5-12. We have been conducting programs throughout the Windsor, Essex and Kent County areas since 1998. Our mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining and exciting activities that instill a clear understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world around them. Our approach is simple. We use exciting activities and spectacular demonstrations to capture the attention and imagination of children.

Can my child expect an exciting yet controlled atmosphere?
Yes! Mad Science strives at all times to provide safe and fun science activities to all children. In an effort to fulfill this commitment, we ask that all children enrolled adhere to basic and clear behavioral guidelines established and explained the first day of camp. We realize that the hands-on, high-energy nature of our program excites and motivates children. Our programs are specifically designed to harness and direct that excitement.

Mad Science Instructors set clear boundaries and expectations as to appropriate conduct and we will hold all campers to these expectations. We ask for your cooperation, should any parent be notified of discipline problems. If necessary, Mad Science may ask that a child be removed from camp. Please know that it is our intention to provide children with, not deprive them of, exciting and fun science. It is only when a child interrupts or interferes with this positive learning atmosphere that we would take any such action. In such a case, a pro rated refund, less a $25 administration fee, will be happily returned.

What ages are the camps designed for?
Most of our camps are designed for first graders to sixth graders. Our “SchoolHouse Chess” camp is targeted to second graders to sixth graders, but is open to younger or older children with an aptitude for, and an interest in, chess.  Please call us for recommendations.

How do I register my child?
Space is limited to 20 campers for each camp. Registrations will be accepted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Completed forms may be mailed in or dropped off at the Mad Science office.  On-line registration is available.  We are unable to accept telephone registrations. Registration forms will be processed only when accompanied by payment in full. Please keep a copy of your completed and signed registration form. Registrations will be accepted up to the Friday of the week prior to each camp, provided that spaces are still available.

How can I pay?
The cost of a full week camp is $195 (tax exempt) per camper.  Single days are available for $40 per camper.  Payment for camp is due with the return of each child’s completed registration form. We accept cash, cheque, debit, Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Currently dated cheques must be made out to “Mad Science of Windsor”. Please note that NSF or STOP PAYMENT cheques will result in a $25 administration fee. If repayment is made in the Mad Science office within 7 days, the administration fee will be reduced to $10.  Failure to pay camp registration fees and/or administration fees will result in a child being withdrawn from the program.

Do you have any discounts?

Get the lowest available price of $175 per week by booking two or more full summer camp weeks for your child at the same time.

What are the camp hours?
Camp programming runs from 9 am - 4 pm. Early drop-off child care (8 am) or late pick-up (5 pm) options are now available (extra fees may apply)
How will I know if my child is registered?
Your immediate on-line payment advice is your best way to know for sure! We will also call you the week before to remind you that Camp will be starting soon.

Is the camp fee tax deductible?
Receipts for tax purposes will be given to your child on the last day of the program. Please safeguard this receipt as there is a $10 fee to issue duplicate receipts for lost paperwork. Keep your original receipt for tax purposes. Please consult your accountant regarding the Child Care Expenses Deduction.

Do you have a guarantee?
Yes! Our guarantee is simple. You will be satisfied with Mad Science or we will make it right. We are confident in, and put our reputation behind, the quality of our programs and Instructors.

What is your refund and camp cancellation policy?
Full refunds are available up to 2 weeks before the start of each program, after which time only 50% of the fee, less a $25 administration charge, will be refunded. Mad Science reserves the right to cancel any program due to insufficient registration. In this case registrants may transfer to another session or receive a full refund. Should we have to cancel the camp, we will strive to provide the parents with as much notice as possible.

How will the children be dismissed each day?
Your child will be dismissed at the end of each day according to what you have indicated during registration. Should this information change, we ask that you notify us in writing. For your child’s safety, parents picking up their children are asked to do so inside the camp building (we will not release children into the parking lot without a parent or guardian present).

What if my child misses a day?
If a child is absent one day, it does not affect the child’s participation in other days, as each day has an independent topic (with the exception of SchoolHouse Chess where skills are taught in a progressive manner). Unfortunately, due to scheduling differences and camp size limits, missed days cannot be made up. If you know in advance that your child will need to miss a specific day, please let us know when you register and the camp registration fee will be adjusted accordingly. However, once we have started the camp, Mad Science has invested in the required program materials and personnel and cannot offer a refund for missed days.

What does my child get out of it?
Mad Science campers will get an unforgettable camp experience and receive a variety of creative projects to make and take home. Our programs get children, even children who have not previously expressed an interest in science, excited about science so that they go back to their parents and teachers wanting to learn more.

In fact, some parents have told us that their children’s science grades have gone up after participating in Mad Science. A recent educational study (Char and Miller, 2006) found that participation in Mad Science led to a significant increase in students’ knowledge of science content and concepts.

What is the Waiting List Policy?
Mad Science is a very popular program and camps fill up quickly. We do our best to accept as many registrants as possible; however, we are limited by the availability of camp space and Mad Science Instructors. As a result, we sometimes have to place children on a waiting list. If additional spaces become available, these children are given first priority. Please register early to avoid disappointment.

Can I sign my child up for more than one camp?
Yes, in fact, we encourage it. Each camp topic is completely different, so your child can enjoy them all without repeating activities.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. Will it be the same camp as last year?
Mad Science of Windsor offers 9 unique camp experiences.  We rotate the schedule each summer so your child has the best opportunity to see programming new to him or her!  If you are unsure if your child has already attended one of our camp topics, call our office and we can check your previous registration information.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?
Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun!  Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We have regularly scheduled breaks during the day that may take place outdoors (weather permitting).  As well, we may go outside from time-to-time for experiments that can't be conducted inside the Mad Lab.

Please send your child with a lunch, beverages and snacks. PLEASE AVOID PEANUT BASED FOODS. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp.

Medical and other information about your camper
Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science full-day summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper, such as allergies, medical issues or learning challenges. This will provide the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper to ensure safe and fun participation in the program.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. Although trained in first aid, CPR and EpiPen administration, Mad Science instructors are NOT trained in provision of medical services of any kind.  If your child requires regular medical services (diabetes blood testing, administration of medication, etc), please contact the Mad Science office to make arrangements for your child's caregiver during camp.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.
