Birthday Party FAQ

What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?
During the first 45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, seeing flash paper disappear and creating bubbling potions with dry ice. During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, the kids will make slime, silly putty, a superball or another cool item to take home. Adding on a rocket launch or cotton candy will add about 15 minutes to the length of your party.

How far in advance do I need to book my party?
Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 2 - 3 weeks in advance is recommended.

What do I need to do to make a reservation?
Just call us at (519) 839-6094 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone. We don't require a deposit, but ask that you pay your Mad Scientist in full on the day of the party.  We accept cash, cheque, Visa, MasterCard and American Express on site (please let us know if you will be paying by credit card so we can send out the paper slip).  You may also pay by debit in the Mad Science office.

What time and date can I have my party?
Parties at your location can be booked 24 hours a day (really!).  We've done early morning events, late night parties and everything in between.  We are available 364 days a year (we only skip Christmas Day)!  Mad Lab parties are generally held on Saturdays and Sundays, but we will work with you to schedule the perfect time and date.  All dates and times are subject to availability.

Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?
No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. We ask that you plan for the largest number of children expected. On the day of the party, you will be charged only for the number of kids that actually attend.  We do not discount for children below the number already included in your party package (10 children for out-of-house parties; 11 children for Mad Lab parties).

Do you have any themed parties?
All our themes revolve around science and some have cool storyline or themes built-in.  Our most popular party is the Wizard party where children will cast spells (with a big help from science!) to levitate objects and more.  Our Pirate party is perfect for taking the party to the high seas (no bad pirates in our parties!) and our Fairy Tale party makes your birthday child the prince or princess who saves the day! If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.

When will the Mad Scientist arrive?
The Mad Scientist will arrive at least 15 minutes early to set up and will be ready to start the show at the time you booked. It is best to start your party at least 30 minutes before your Mad Science show is scheduled to start, to ensure the Mad Scientist is able to start on time.

What kind of space is needed?
We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist and for your guests to be comfortable as well.  We recommend a 6' or 8' table for the Mad Scientist's equipment as well as an electrical outlet or extension cord for power.  Some parties require water and we just ask for a place to fill up a pitcher with water (a kitchen sink or laundry tub will do just fine!).  The kids can be seated on the floor or on chairs, several feet back from the table.

How much space is needed for the rocket launch?
The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized backyard or open space to launch the rocket (subject to airport restrictions for no-fly zones; call our office for specific distance restrictions). If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely.

Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?
We will call you the Monday before your party to confirm any last minute details or guest numbers.  Any changes to your party must be scheduled at least three business days before your party.  Changes made closer to your party date will be accommodated, if possible.

Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?
The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and continue until our portion of the entertainment is finished. If you need the Mad Scientist to stop for any other activities (ex. food or cake) he/she will still need to finish at the scheduled time as there are often other parties scheduled on the same day that need to start on time. Please plan accordingly.

Can I have the phone number of my Mad Scientist?
We do not provide the Mad Scientist’s personal contact information. If you would like the Mad Scientist to call you on the day of your party, we can make a note for him/her to do so.

For what ages are your parties appropriate?
Our standard parties are appropriate for children between 5 to 12 years of age. Younger siblings generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children who participate and make the take-home project.

When do I pay?
At the end of your party, you will pay the Mad Scientist the amount owing (subject to adjustments for your actual number of guests). You can pay with cash, cheque, Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

What is your policy on tipping?
If you think your Mad Scientist did a great job, a tip is very much appreciated but not expected.  When possible, we request that any tips be paid separately from your event payment.

If you have any other questions, please call us at (519) 839-6094.
